Maui Now > Article Image Guidelines

When adding an image to your article, here are a few pointers to ensure the image fits with the template. Images can greatly affect the overall look of the site, so be thoughtful of the featured images you choose for your article. Proper image selection can be the difference between a reader clicking your article, and skimming over it.

  • The “perfect” image size is 800 pixels (wide) by 533 pixels (tall). 72dpi RGB (Web Standard). JPEG, GIF, or PNG.
  • The ideal photo orientation is landscape (wide, rather than tall): This ensures that the article lists and featured article slider display the entire image, rather than cutting it off.
  • Use Logos as a LAST RESORT: When using logos, they can appear distorted in the article list/featured article slider.
  • Large, but not too large: Large images are ideal, but going to large can slow down the site, and deter readers. If the image is larger than 1000 pixels wide or tall, it's probably too large. If the image is larger than 600 kilobytes (kb), try sizing it down.
  • Text in Images: If you'd like to add text to an image, make sure it's towards the middle of the image, with at least 1 inch margin. (example below)

The above image is an example of a “Perfect Featured Image”. The dimensions are 800 pixels wide by 533 pixels tall, it's JPEG format, under 80 kilobytes (kb), and the text is centered with ample margins,

Inline Images

Images that appear within the article go by similar guidelines as the Featured image, with a couple exceptions:

  • With inline images, the landscape orientation isn't a priority.
  • Logos are less likely to be distorted when they appear in the article page, and not as the featured image.
